One of the biggest obstacles to our success is the lack of money (or the fear of regret when we spend it). But what if I told you there was a tool that could completely eliminate all of your fear and crush those financial obstacles? What if there was an app that would literally change your life? There is!! YNAB is the best budgeting app available today with the ability to not only plan how you want to spend your money but to keep you accountable to those goals so you don’t get off track. If you’ve ever struggled to pay your bills, wished you had more savings or felt like you were drowning in debt, keep reading! I’m about to share with you the answer to your problems!
Our financial story
When Gilbert and I were first married, neither of us had ever lived on our own, we had no savings, tons of student loans and other debt, and we hadn’t learned any good money habits from our parents. But we were determined to do the best we could.
Gilbert’s dad passed away in 2013 and left us a decent little nest egg and a house, which gave us just the headstart we needed to start winning with money. Ok, so we ended up blowing through the entire inheritance, but we did pay off several small debts and we still had a house with super low taxes and no mortgage. We were in a pretty good spot.
Once we started using the YNAB budgeting app and learned rule 4 (we’ll talk about that in a moment), we quickly saved up to get us a month ahead on our expenses. We already had a $1,000 baby emergency fund (which we had learned from Dave Ramsey was Baby Step #1). Since that time, we’ve been putting as much money as we can towards our student loans.
In the last 5 years, we’ve paid off around $50,000+ in debt (while making an average of less than $60K a year), added two kids to our family (after 3 years of expensive fertility treatments – which we paid for with our savings), bought a house (and sold our first one), paid off our car loans, bought a car with cash, and we still pay all of our bills every month and do fun things together!
We aren’t rich and we still have some improvements we could make, but we’re doing alright for ourselves. And that has a lot to do with YNAB and the ways it has helped us learn how to manage our money effectively.
How the YNAB budgeting app is different
Most budgeting programs work more like a set it and forget it type of system. You set up your budget once (or maybe once a month) and then you never look at it again. Or you don’t look at it again until the end of the month when there’s nothing you can do about all the overspending you’ve already done.
Another big drawback of some of the most popular “budgeting” tools available is that they really aren’t truly built for budgeting, at least not the kind of budgeting we need to succeed. You’ll often be told that you need to budget your money before you actually have it – that this will keep you from spending money before you decide what you need to spend it on. And while I think this practice has good intentions – it really doesn’t represent reality.
This type of budgeting is actually called forecasting. That’s the process in which you make hypothetical plans for hypothetical money that you assume or hope you’ll receive. In practice, that means you’re usually going to be budgeting your next paycheck before you actually get paid. Or maybe even making plans for money that’s not even guaranteed but that you hope to receive. That’s not all bad, but it doesn’t show you the truth.
YNAB is different. With YNAB, you only budget money you currently have available to you. But it doesn’t stop there. Where many programs fall short with keeping you on track, YNAB has built-in features that help you stay accountable to your goals.
Within the YNAB budgeting app, you can set goals for each category and keep track of your spending throughout the month. This keeps you accountable to the goals you set. Where other programs just tell you after the fact that you didn’t meet your goal – and basically give you the sense of, “Well, better luck next time,” YNAB actually helps you make adjustments as you go so you can stay on track with your priorities.
One program I used before YNAB was built by one of the leading names in the industry. But my biggest frustration with it was that it was virtually impossible to track my regular spending within my budget. That essentially meant that my account tracking and my budget were two separate things – and that made no sense to me! Either I would create a budget and never stick to it, or I’d have to track my spending in two separate places – one to keep track of my “real” money and one to keep track of how my spending measured up against my plan (budget). And that was a hassle.
My absolute favorite part of the YNAB budgeting app is that it’s all integrated! When you enter a transaction into YNAB, it tracks not only your account balances but also your budget balances. So now when you go to make a purchase, you look at the appropriate category rather than your account balance. For instance, you might have $1,000 in your checking account and think, “Awesome, I can totally afford this!” But with YNAB, you’ll look and see that you only have $10 available in your eating out category and that $20 dinner out with your friend isn’t going to happen (at least not if you want to be able to make your rent payment next week).
Where other programs make budgeting more of an afterthought to your spending, YNAB helps your spending keep up with your budgeting goals as you go.
With features like built-in goal tracking, cross-device integration, budget reports, personal support, secure data, plus the proven method of the four rules, you seriously can’t go wrong with YNAB!
YNAB is available on desktop, iPhone, Android, iPad, the apple watch, and even Alexa. Your budget syncs seamlessly across all devices so you can always share with your partner or kids or anyone else you want and you can check your budget no matter where you are!
The four rules are literally where the magic happens. By giving every dollar a job, embracing your true expenses, rolling with the punches, and aging your money, it’s almost impossible NOT to become a raging success story! These rules are so stupid simple and unlike anything you will hear from other experts in personal finance. You don’t even have to cut up your credit cards because YNAB teaches you how to use them responsibly!
YNAB literally changed my family’s life for the better, and it can do the same for you. Unlike other budgeting apps and software, YNAB has built-in tools that help you make and stick to your money goals and stay on track. It’s almost impossible not to reach your goals!
